Psalm 69

Soul Bondages & Soul Bandages

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. Psalm 69:1‭-‬2‭

In small group last night, we discussed for some time the role of fasting in breaking bondages. In the course of this focus, the insight came up that bondages are in souls all around us. These are like thousands of idols holding people captive in chains of slavery. All these are needing to be broken and set free for their and our eternal deliverance and salvation.

When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. But I pray to you, Lord, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. Psalm 69:10‭-‬11‭, ‬13‭-‬15

This is an urgent matter for greater, immediate and daily attention because souls are at stake, the eternal destination of souls.

The Spirit of Lord Yahweh is on me, because anointed [Messiah] has Yahweh me to proclaim good news [evangelize L4:18] to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners. Isaiah 61:1

    It is pretty neat to see how several verses in Psalm 69 are clearly lived out and rehearsed in the gospel accounts.

    Psalm 69:4
    “More in number than the hairs of my head
    are those who hate me without a cause;
    mighty are those who would destroy me,
    those who attack me with lies.
    What I did not steal
    must I now restore?”

    John 15:5
    “But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated Me without reason.'”

    Psalm 69:9 “For zeal for your house has consumed me,
    and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.”

    John 2:17 “His disciples remembered that it was written: “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.”

    Psalm 69:21 “They gave me poison for food,
    and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.”

    Matthew 27:34 “They offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.”
    Matthew 27:48 “One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink.”

    We would hold that when David many times cries out for retribution, that this is only in line with the Old Covenant. Psalm 69 has its share of these cries for vengeance from the Lord on David’s adversaries. Here is verses 22-28 where the bulk of it is found:

    22 Let their own table before them become a snare;
    and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.[c]
    23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,
    and make their loins tremble continually.
    24 Pour out your indignation upon them,
    and let your burning anger overtake them.
    25 May their camp be a desolation;
    let no one dwell in their tents.
    26 For they persecute him whom you have struck down,
    and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.
    27 Add to them punishment upon punishment;
    may they have no acquittal from you.[d]
    28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living;
    let them not be enrolled among the righteous.

    But ultimately, God’s hands of mercy will only be held out for so long before the door of opportunity is closed and all that is left is destruction for those who would not come to Him for grace. Again, this is lived out and expressed by the mouth of Jesus in the gospels:

    Luke 13:35
    “Look, your house is left to you desolate. And I tell you that you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.'”

    And also by the words of 2 Peter 3:9-10
    “9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”

    Outside of the ark of safety there is nothing left but destruction. The blood of Jesus is the entry way into that ark of safety. And we are the ambassadors calling to this world to come and be reconciled to God.

    And then compare these 2 tables

    May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. Psalms 69:22

    You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Psalms 23:5
