Ezekiel 31

The Cedars of Lebanon

Therefore no other trees by the waters are ever to tower proudly on high, lifting their tops above the thick foliage. No other trees so well-watered are ever to reach such a height; they are all destined for death, for the earth below, among mortals who go down to the realm of the dead. Ezekiel 31:14

The powerful and lofty nations and empires are as the cedars of Lebanon which will all be felled on the mountains. From the 2500 year long empire of Assyria centered in Nineveh through unto the ends of the age.

  1. Perfect Humility

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:48

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:4 – 5 , 9 – 14

I think verse 10 is the key to this chapter and the word pride. In proverbs it says pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. I think the lesson to me is be humble in everything I do because every blessing and every accomplishment is only by the grace of God.

    Double AMEN!

“ ‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because the great cedar towered over the thick foliage, and because it was proud of its height. Ezekiel 31:10

So, we see here that there are 2 dual factors:

    1. Pride-humility
    2. Greatness-lowliness

    We are to:
-Be lowly in any high position
-Take pride in any low position

    We are to beware:
    -Pride in greatness
    -Humility in lowliness (false humility)

This last point could be misunderstood
    Humility is always right

Yet He does instruct us to take pride in our low position so we should not wallow in self pity which is not in keeping with the measure of faith we are given.

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Romans 12:3

Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. James 1:9 – 10
