Myths & Fables: A Cautionary Tale

Do not listen to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. I Timothy 1:4

Reject profane and old wives’ tales, and exercise yourself toward godliness. I Timothy 4:7

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to myths. II Timothy 4:3‭-‬4

Do not listen to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn from the truth. Titus 1:14

For we did not follow cunningly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. II Peter 1:16

Take note

It is one thing to take note of those things we should avoid. It is another thing entirely to remain so clearly focused that we NOT become distracted to focus on those things we ought not focus on but rather to remain clearly focused on those things we ARE to remain focused on.

To this end, let us engage in this experiment.

Here are the 2 lists

Things to avoid
•Myths
•Endless genealogies
•Old wives tales
•Jewish myths
•Human commandments
•Cleverly devised myths

Things to pursue
•Godly edification in faith
•Godliness
•Sound doctrine
•Truth
•Power & coming of JESUS CHRIST

  1. I can’t help but notice that Paul once again brings up the Law in this chapter. He notes that there is a certain group of teachers who are obsessed with it and don’t understand its true purpose. The Law is given to condemn people, increase sin, and show us that it isn’t our solution for life. However, if we respond properly to the Law’s lesson, we believe in the Lord Jesus, who is the only one who can deliver us from our sins and the condemnation of the Law.
Doctrine/Theology/Right Beliefs mattered to Paul. Therefore, we should focus on the ultimate teaching of the Bible, namely Jesus Christ himself. If a group or denomination begins to obsess about some side issue in Theology or even the Law itself (the 7th Day Adventists are an excellent example), there is something wrong and they need to follow the advice given in this chapter.

  2. Don’t teach strange doctrines.
Don’t pay attention to myths and endless genealogies.
Don’t turn aside to fruitless discussions.
Don’t desire to be teachers of the Law without understanding what you are saying and the matters about which you make confident assertions.
Don’t reject faith and suffer shipwreck.

Do things that further the administration of God.
Fight the good fight of faith.
Keep faith and a good conscience.

  3. I love the fact that the scripture itself gives almost ZERO idea to answer our questions about what these various old wives tales, fables, Jewish myths etc actually are.

    Let’s not miss that

That is likely precisely because we are not to know these things. Because they are not good. They are a waste of time.
