Leave Wanting More

The LORD’s Supper
It was a particularly rewarding time tonight gathering with other followers in our virtual meeting of Wisdom in the WORD. In our first session, we read the opening passage of today’s WTW chapter, Luke 22. This led into a hearty discussion on the topic of how to rediscover even more of the full meaning and depths of the LORD’S supper. We also considered how families with children can and do celebrate the meal while remaining aware of the significance and power of the cup of the new covenant JESUS brought.

Even More Effective
In the second part of WTW tonight, we talked about how to continue in evangelism and discipleship including Mission 2021. We want to continue evaluating all our various current engagements in the WORD while exploring new ways to improve. It is our desire to be even more effective and to continue finding new ways to continue reaching even more people with more of the same transformational daily personal engagements in the WORD.

Mutual Edification
If you are reading this, would you consider continuing our WTW discussion from tonight by posting a reply comment below? We would love to hear even a short word from every single person who reads this. Whether you were able to join us tonight or not, there is an important thing we discovered and will all acknowledge. This is the fact that everyone of us who opens up, walks in and lives out God’s WORD has something valuable to contribute. When we each do this, we will unquestionably edify and encourage each other as we all continue daily to read, engage and apply Wisdom in the WORD. We look forward to hearing more from each of you about what the LORD is doing in your heart and life through His WORD.

  1. It sounds like a great first gathering.

Jesus said in Luke 22:20 “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.”

This reference to the covenant struck me, as I don’t recall Jesus using that phrase or terminology elsewhere. Did the disciples even understand this? It seems they were still unclear as to what was about to happen to Jesus and how He would establish His Kingdom.

Paul, who was not a follower of Jesus at the time described in Luke 22, quotes this word of Jesus in 1 Corinthians 11:25. And Paul, perhaps more than any other author, expounded on the significance and meaning of the new covenant.

How easy it is to overlook or forget how paramount Jesus’ sacrifice was and the importance that we remember it.

  2. During our time together, we also talked about the annual Jewish passover meal called ‘seder’ and realized in our discussion that there is a further distinction worth noting. While there is certainly a wonderful richness in experiencing and understanding the deep meanings in the seder meal, still, JESUS introduced the full understanding in the bread and cup of the New Covenant as bookends at the beginning and end of the special seder meal of fellowship. With this in mind, those of us who are the ‘ethnikos’ and not Jewish can certainly gain from understanding the meanings of the seder. At the same time, all followers of JESUS, both Jewish and we who are ethnics (often called gentiles, meaning nations) will then gain even greater understanding about the bread & cup of the New Covenant.

    Paul instructs
So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions. 1 Cor 11:20‭-‬22‭, ‬33‭-‬34

Some other terms worth noting are:
Passover, pesach, seder, last supper, Lord’s supper, bread, cup, elements, love feast, avondmaal, communion, eucharist

  3. I also just remembered a couple of us even had a chance in a short but profound preliminary to our WTW time yesterday to dig a bit further into those amazing chapters Matthew 24 & Luke 21. Considering the relatively short amount of time, we talked at a good length about the abomination of desolation, multiple fulfillments and yet the need for some renewed fulfillment because of the indication in Matthew ‘immediately after the tribulation of those days.’ In the course of our discussion we even made mention of David Jeremiah & Antiochus Epiphanesas well as Titus et al.

I have not yet embarked on a study of the Passover, the Lord’s supper. But I noticed this:

In Luke 22:16, Jesus said He would never again eat (the meal) until IT is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.

How is the Passover fulfilled in the KoG? The Passover was fulfilled when the angel of death passed by and was no longer a risk to the Israelites.

“and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning.” Exodus 12:23

…until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.
    2 Peter 1:19

The last enemy that will be abolished is death.
    1 Corinthians 15:26
