Isaiah 38

In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what Yahweh says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”
Isaiah 38:1

Wisdom shows us the miracle of life by reminding us of our mortality.

JESUS shows us the miracle of eternal life by inviting us to His resurrection.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.
John 11:25

  1. The warning of death and the accompanying instruction are important facts we shouldn’t overlook.

I was struck by the parallel passage in 2nd Kings 20. There we get a few more details than in Isaiah. Like that Isaiah wasn’t even past the middle court on his way out before God sent him back to Hezekiah, seemingly in response to the king’s weeping. In that minute or so, God heard Hezekiah, decided on the answer, and sent Isaiah back to deliver that answer.

We also see that Isaiah asks Hezekiah how he wants the confirmation sign that Hezekiah asked for to work; should the shadow of the setting sun go up or down the stairs? Of course Hezekiah chose the unnatural one. By the way, why did Hezekiah think “it was easy” to accelerate the normal movement of the shadow? 🤔

It is comforting that God does consider us individually, our specific prayers and requests. Not that He is obliged to, but He does. This encourages me to pray with specifics, not to shy away from asking for certain details to be done a certain way, but to also accept whatever and however He answers.
