3 John

The elder, To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth. 3 John 1:1

Gaius is not a familiar name from the Gospels or Acts or the other epistles. So too in our own lives, the names may change over the years of those who we are walking with in koinonia, but there is ONE who is the Friend we walk with Who continues faithfully over the span of all the years.

  1. And here in 3 John we come also to another unique and intriguing instance of that word for which we have already had to dig past the English to understand. Here, John commends the brotherhood as they did not accept any help from non Jews. The Greek word is always ethnos/ethnikos/ethnikon which means nations or peoples. The English continues to follow the Catholic Latin tradition using the word Gentile similar to the Spanish ‘gente’ meaning people. Yet here, where it suggests an interesting distinction between the Jewish and non Jewish followers of JESUS, the corrupt English chooses either the catholic word Gentile or worse to use the English word pagan for the same exact Greek word which means nations and which always refers in these Jewish scriptures to non Jews.

It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the ethnikos.
