A Man’s Pen

Here is today’s WTW assignment should you choose to accept it.

Take a large notepad, and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Isaiah 18, in your own words.

Then do the same for today’s chapter 21 as well as chapters 19 & 20.

You don’t have to write each chapter word for word, but write the message God is speaking. Write as writing God’s own words so it is as clear and understandable as it should be.

Chapters 18 and 20 are only 7 and 6 verses long respectively, so writing the full message of those 2 chapters will be ideal. For the others, a summary will do. And finally, an overview summary of the entire message of chapters 18-21 will be especially good in your own words for understanding what God is speaking in these chapters. What God has spoken and what He is speaking…to you, to me, to us…to all, through these chapters in His WORD.

This is your assignment… should you choose to accept it.

Take a large notepad

And

Take a man’s pen.

Then share what you write.

Misplaced Trust

WTW 2021

Isaiah 20

In the year that the supreme commander, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and attacked and captured it—Those who trusted in Cush and boasted in Egypt will be dismayed and put to shame. In that day the people who live on this coast will say, ‘See what has happened to those we relied on, those we fled to for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?’
Isaiah 20:1‭, ‬5‭-‬6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5‭-‬6

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
Jeremiah 17:5‭-‬10

Egypt, My People

WTW 2021
February 19
Isaiah 19

In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together. In that day Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing on the earth. The Lord Almighty will bless them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance.”
Isaiah 19:23‭-‬25

Praise be to the God of all nations, the Savior of all people, Messiah of all mankind!

Wide Angle Lens

A Broader Picture Begins to Appear

ISAIAH

Focus begins fully centered on Israel in chapters 1-5. Then there is a vision of Yahweh on His throne in chapter 6. After this, the focus shifts to God’s chosen agent of punishment and His chosen Man of Deliverance, Messiah. The shift here becomes clear as a shift in focus. The early focus settings show God’s plan as being focused only on Israel. Once the focus is adjusted to a wider angle, it becomes clear that His plan will involve the other nations.

This is the broad view of God’s plan. His plan begins with Israel. Then, through His chosen agents, through His Chosen One, the picture expands from a narrow angle to a panoramic lens. This is the progression through God’s written WORD, from old to new. And this is the same progression also through Isaiah, which we have seen can be observed like a micro Bible. This is the view through the wide angle lens: first to the Jews, then to the nations.

Hwaet!

Hwæt! We Gardena       in geardagum,

Listen! We of the Spear-Danes     in days of yore
Of those folk-kings      the glory have heard

We have heard of Moab’s pride—how great is her arrogance!—of her conceit, her pride and her insolence; but her boasts are empty.
Isaiah 16:6

Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.
God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. His glory covered the heavens and his praise filled the earth.
Habakkuk 3:2-3

He said: “The Lord came from Sinai and dawned over them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran. He came with myriads of holy ones from the south, from his mountain slopes.

Only JESUS

Turning from reflection on a life well lived back to songs of worship, I hear this powerful message:

Only JESUS

Make it count, leave a mark, build a name for yourself
Dream your dreams, chase your heart, above all else
Make a name the world remembers
But all an empty world can sell is empty dreams
I got lost in the light when it was up to me
To make a name the world remembers
But Jesus is the only name to remember

And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
Only Jesus
And I, I’ve only got one life to live
I’ll let every second point to Him
Only Jesus

All the kingdoms built, all the trophies won
Will crumble into dust when it’s said and done
‘Cause all that really mattered
Did I live the truth to the ones I love?
Was my life the proof that there is only One
Whose name will last forever?

And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
Only Jesus
And I, I’ve only got one life to live
I’ll let every second point to Him
Only Jesus

Jesus is the only name
Jesus is the only name
Jesus is the only name to remember, oh
Jesus is the only name
Jesus is the only name
Jesus is the only name to remember

And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
Only Jesus
And I, I’ve only got one life to live
I’ll let every second point to Him
Only Jesus

Understanding

WTW 2021
February 18
Isaiah 18

Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!
Isaiah 18:2b

Understanding is so important.
Understanding God’s WORD is key.
This requires knowing what God says, and this means knowing and understanding the words He speaks and what He means.

For so the Lord said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.
Isaiah 18:4

At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
Matthew 11:25

Let us come like little children again today, and we will understand what our Father is saying to us.

Isaiah 18:2

Go, swift messengers, To a nation far and remote, To a people thrust forth and away—A nation of gibber and chatter—Whose land is cut off by streams; Which sends out envoys by sea, In papyrus vessels upon the water!

Mashak literally means draw or drag.
Morat means peeled.
Mashak has somehow been translated in some cases as tall.
Morat has somehow been translated in some cases as fair-skinned.
God is identifying the people he is indicating here.

In That Day, Part 3
